Making the decision...........


During the pandemic, I would come home from a day of pandemic life in a large teriary healthcare center, and Brian would have these video's lined up for me.  JP and Amelia have a very elaborate Youtube channel, explaining everything anyone could possibly need to know about immigrating and flourishing in Ecuador.  There were many, many other videos from others we watched as well, but after sifting through all of the expat friendly places we could go live, this video sums up our reasons.  Enjoy!

Law and Order in Ecuador

 First of all, I am by no means an expert.  I have asked around to different people, and gotten different answers.  If I find out later, the information I have received is false, I will go back and correct it.  This is what I have gathered so far. The area I live in is pretty safe.  Many reasons for this are explained in the previous post.  The bottom line is that the area, due to it's location brings in money - not just from the Ex-pats, who are carefully vetted, and must have a certain income to live here - but from the wealthy people in Quito.  The mayor is very pro-active - when a couple of people were shot in broad daylight, response was swift - he immediately flew to Quito for more National Police, which were expediently granted.  The irony is Quito is becoming more dangerous, and not granted this protection.  Cuenca, a mountain city of about 300,000 also has a pro-active mayor, and probably the largest concentration of ex-pats.  P...

Questions people keep asking us.....aka "FAQs"

  As I start this blog, which exists for the sole purpose of updating friends and family on our lives abroad, it seems most reasonable to begin with some FAQs.   So here they are. Why are you moving abroad, and how long will you be gone? A:  For Brian, it was about wanting to get out of Portland and try something new.  We have a small window of time where we are both in good health, the kids have left home, and no grandbabies are expected for a few years.  This opportunity will never come again.  We expect to be gone for at least just over 2 years, and then we will play it by ear.  The other answer is to save for retirement.  To be honest, we do not have as much as we are going to need, and the cost of living is much cheaper in Ecuador than the US, and there is a huge tax break living outside of the country.  We are hoping to maximize our retirement savings. We interrupt this program.....

 From talks of Ecuador, let's go back and visit the US again, for a moment.  I have been here for 4 1/2 months, and just clocked out and approved my timecard for the last time, and handed in my badge at Providence Portland Medical Center. +++Warning - this addresses the strike.  Because I start out defending the need for the way Providence handled the staffing needs during the strike, it may leave a bad taste that I am defending Providence in general.  For the most part, I am not - please read all before coming to a conclusion.  I think Providence is allowing the accusations of impropriety with their strike labor practice to deflect from the real issues.
